“Humble yourselves under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6
I am sure that all of us pray for our families, and I imagine some have the practice to fast for their children and spouse. I would like for us to embark together on a new thing for our families, and that is to join together to pray and fast for our own families and for each other's.
This is a simple, one-day agreeing together in prayer on Friday, the 1st of August.
As I was praying about this, three things stood out as important to my own prayer:
Gratitude: My husband and children, my marriage and family vocation, are gifts to me from God. It's time to step back from focusing on how I wish things were different and consecrate time to giving God thanks instead.
Authority: God has put me and my husband in a position of authority over my children. We need grace, big time, to exercise that authority with wisdom, joy and peace. We need to again surrender that authority to God and ask Him to purify us unto that end.
Humility: As we give way in our hearts to the Lord, emptying ourselves, we make room for the Lord to work. Together I would like for us to collectively make lots of room for our Lord to work in the hearts and lives of our kids. Together we can ask Him to move in them and do what we cannot.
If you feel called to participate in this small act of prayer and fasting, please join us on August 1, and ask other parents to join us as well. Please consider also ending this fast with Mass at Holy Family parish on Saturday, August 2, where a votive Mass for the family will be offered at 8:30am. We will gather for a light breakfast immediately afterward in the parish hall. Please, bring what you would like to share.
